The Walla Walla Valley AVA is a sub-AVA of the Columbia Valley located in Washington State and includes part of the northeastern corner of Oregon. It gained AVA status in 1984 when there were barely 60 acres of vines in the entire valley, most of which were located in Oregon. In fact, the first planting of grapes can be traced back to the 1840’s when French fur trappers settled in a small town outside of the city known as Frenchtown near Lowden. Grape vines were also imported in the late 1850’s from Champoeg, Oregon. In the mid-1990’s a growing number of boutique wineries appeared on the scene and new substantial plantings were grown to accommodate them. Currently this AVA has the second highest concentration of vineyards and wineries in Washington State. Most of this AVA is dry and requires irrigation and produces some amazing Syrahs, Merlots, and Cabernet Sauvignons. There are 204 wines labeled with the Walla Walla Valley designation. Other varietals include, Sangiovese, Malbec, Semillon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Carmenere.
