The Snake River Valley Ava encompasses western Idaho and eastern Oregon. The winding Snake River marks the border between this area and creates a micro climate that is conducive for grape growing, despite its high elevation and dry, desert landscape. This AVA has a total of 8,263 acres, 1,800 of which have been planted with vineyards. There are 31 wineries located in this AVA, 25 are on the valley’s western end, six are located on the eastern portion and two more are north of Twin Falls near Sun Valley. There are approximately 46 vineyards that produce Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Canadic, Chardonnay, Cinsault, Gewurztraminer, Grenache, Lemberger, Malbec, Merlot, Mourvedre, Riesling and Syrah. The Snake River Valley was granted AVA status in 2007 after a successful petition put forth by the Idaho Grape Growers and Wine Producers Commission. In order for wines to bear the label of the Snake River Valley, 85% of the grapes produced and used in their wines, must come from this specific designation.
