The Red Mountain AVA was recognized in June 2001. It is one of the premier growing sites for fine wine grapes, and is the warmest of the five viticultural areas in Washington State. In large part this is due to its geography. It is a moderately steep slope, facing southwest as it rises above a sharp bend in the Yakima River, at the eastern edge of the Yakima Valley. This AVA has 4,040 acres, 700 of which are dedicated to vineyards. Due to the carbonate-rich sandy loam soils, coupled with low growing techniques, grapes in this AVA tend to be of intense concentration, structure and complexity. Varietals that grow extremely well in this AVA are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Lemberger, and a wide variety of Rhone grapes such as Syrah. Even wine growers in Tuscany have recognized this extremely productive bit of land. A high profile project is currently underway by the Col Solare winery and estate vineyard. They will bring the prestigious Antinori family of Tuscany to Red Mountain, in a collaboration with Ste. Michelle Wine Estates.
