The Horse Heaven Hills AVA is an American Viticultural Area in southeastern Washington State.  It is part of the larger Columbia Valley AVA and borders the Yakima Valley AVA on the north and the Columbia River on the south.  Grapes grown on the south-facing slopes of Horse Heaven Hills receive benefit from strong winds coming up from the Columbia Gorge.  The extreme winds reducing the likelihood of fungal and rot diseases, while thickening grape skins and concentrating juices.

More than 20 grape varietals are grown in Horse Heaven Hills with Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon being the primary and featured grapes grown.  The AVA has over 6000 acres of grapes planted, roughly one fifth of Washington State’s grape producing acreage.  However, to date only a handful of wineries claim Horse Heaven Hills as their home. The largest of these wineries is Columbia Crest, which is the largest wine producer in the state.
