Now you may be asking yourself, “what does horseback riding and wine tasting have to do with each other?” I never would have thought that the two would go so well together; but I quickly learned that it is a unique adventure offered in the Dundee Hills area by Jake Price of Jake Price Stables.

During our first winery stop in the Dundee Hills area, I quickly noticed four Tennessee walking horses tethered to a rail under a Douglas Fir next to the tasting room at Winter’s Hill Vineyard.  Intrigued by what I saw, I approached these amazing creatures and just when I was imagining myself going for a ride, I was approached by Jake Price, owner of Jake Price Stables in  Carlton, Oregon.

What a character Jake is. I immediately fell in love with his outgoing, jovial and quick witted personality. His love for these horses was very evident and he truly enjoys sharing his passion for horses and the wine country with those he comes in contact with. I learned very quickly that Jake has been training, showing and breeding horses for 38 years. He is a world champion in Carting, Western Riding and English Riding. He was awarded a high honor in 1995 to represent the United States at Equitana, the equestrian sports world fair held in Germany. It was only 2 years ago that he decided that an Equestrian Wine Tour was the perfect addition to Dundee Hills. Now Jake and his son, Don, enjoy providing outstanding equestrian tours to those who want to take in the Dundee Hills wineries on horseback. For $50 an hour, you can take a custom two hour tour with Jake, going through the famous Red Hills of Dundee, taking in some breathtaking countryside as you wind your way between the vineyards and sip some of Oregon’s amazing wine. Jakes new venture has become so popular and well received, that he is booked frequently and he recently was featured in the May issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

Jake is quick to inform everyone that no horse experience is necessary to enjoy this fun experience. You only need to feel comfortable around horses, you need a sense of adventure and a true desire to have a good time!
