The Applegate Valley AVA is one of Oregon’s newest appellations. It was established in 2001 and runs for 50 miles, from the California border to the Rogue River in Southern Oregon. (This is south of Grants Pass and west of Medford and Ashland). It has approximately 235 acres planted in grapes. The vineyards have excellent drainage because of its granite soils. Due to naturally high elevations, this AVA produces some intense and full bodied wines like Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux red varietals. This area proves that Oregon is not just about Pinot Noir anymore. |
